We would like to take this opportunity to welcome your child to first grade. This is a most exciting year for them, as we all will be witnessing great growth academically, physically and spiritually.
We hope we will see all of you at the Open House on September 10th. At that time we’ll go into more detail about what we will be doing this year and answer your questions.
Snack time is scheduled each morning. We would appreciate it if you send in a healthy snack. Juices are not permitted. Your child may keep a water bottle on their desk during the school year. We would appreciate it if you do not send in any snack containing peanuts. We would like to keep it a peanut free room.
After Labor Day, your child will have homework each school night. Homework is not given on the weekends. A homework sheet will be sent home at the beginning of each week. Along with their daily assignments, it is very important that your child reads at least fifteen minutes each night. A reading log will also be sent home for you to sign on a daily basis. Please return the reading log to school every Friday. If you should misplace the homework sheet, you may find the homework assignments on my St. Joseph School Web page.
Please make sure your child has his/her own supplies that are needed in the classroom each day. A list of school supplies was sent home last June. If you need an extra copy of the supply list please notify me or you can find it on my web page.
Birthdays are celebrated during the school year. You may send in any special treats or healthy snacks that you desire. We celebrate birthdays in our classroom after lunch. We ask that you do not send in any drinks. Summer birthdays will be celebrated during the month of June.
Our Gym day is scheduled for Friday. This year we have Gym once a week. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately on Gym Day. Gym will begin after Labor Day.
Our class will be attending Mass once a week at 12:00. All grades will be attending daily Mass during the week.
Please put all hot lunch money and fund-raiser money in a sealed envelope marked with your child’s name and a brief description written on the envelope. This will help us tremendously. Also, if your child’s daily routine changes please send me a written note. It Is our responsibility to make sure your child returns home safely.
Book orders will be sent home monthly. If you would like to order, please pay by check and make it out to the book company or send in cash.
Weekly Reader will be sent to our classroom on a weekly basis along with a Science Supplement. It is a newspaper made up of current events and many activities. I will also be doing an ongoing creative project throughout the year. Can you please send in $10.00 to cover the cost of these expenses as soon as possible? Checks may be written to Cash.
Your child may only bring in a toy to share if he/she is the Student of the Week. Each Friday a student will be chosen randomly to be the Student of the Week. They will complete a poster about themselves with your help at home and return it to school the following Monday to share. They may bring in family photos, toys, stuffed animals, etc. to share with others also.
Please make sure all supplies, covered books and clothing, especially school sweatshirts are labeled with your child’s name. We will be sending home books in the next few days to be covered. Please cover them and return them to school the next day.
Any forms that are sent home for you or your child to be signed must be returned to school as soon as possible.
If your child comes to school in the morning by car, it is very important that he/she arrives on time. All children should meet in the gym by 8:30. Children who are late must report to the office before coming to the classroom.
Also, if your child is absent, please call the office by 9:00 in the morning and send in an absentee note the day your child returns to school. This note must contain your child’s name, date and the reason your child was absent. Please leave word to make arrangements if you would like your child’s homework sent home.
Once a week we invite a Mystery Reader to come to our classroom to read to the children. More information about time and dates will be available during Open House. If any of you are interested you may sign up then. You must be Virtus trained.
Lastly, if you have any extra games, puzzles, books, CDs, art supplies, etc. around the house and would like to contribute them to first grade, I would greatly appreciate it.
We feel as we work together as a team, we can help all our children have a most successful school year. Again, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me by writing a note or calling the school office and I will return your call as soon as possible. We look forward to meeting all of you soon. Thank you again for all of your cooperation. Looking forward to a wonderful year.
