First Grade Goals
My first grade goal is for the students to become successful learners and it is our belief that children learn best by doing. First graders build skills and confidence through learning individually, in small groups, and through shared activities. The class will work together to build an atmosphere that allows for a friendly and safe place to learn throughout the year.
Religion: Students will be introduced to the different concepts of God’s laws and Gospel. They will become familiar with stories and parables from the Bible and apply them to real life situations. Students will show their love for God by being kind and showing respect to others.
Reading, Language Arts, Spelling and Phonics: Students will explicit phonics and comprehension skills. These skills will be taught with extensive reading from both decodable texts and quality literature. From the very beginning students will experience a wide variety of literary forms and genres in a program that exemplifies phonemic awareness, reading, writing and spelling. Throughout the year, the children will be bringing home short decodable books to reread at home to practice the vocabulary and skills that were already taught. Throughout the year, they will also recognize the main idea, predict the outcome of the stories and follow written and oral directions. The writing program involves both reading and writing, using the child’s own language and experiences to write simple stories. Children will learn to edit their own work for punctuation, capitalization and spelling. A portfolio will be sent home at the end of the year for family sharing. By the end of first grade students will be independent readers, creative, well disciplined and work in a group situation.
Mathematics: Students will have an understanding of mathematical concepts through the use of manipulatives, exploring and problem solving. Students will become familiar with patterning, measuring, classifying, weighing, telling time to the half hour, identifying and counting money, fractions, using the calendar, learning the addition and subtraction facts through 18, working with geometric shapes and exploring place value. Students will receive individual help and have a positive experience with mathematics.
Social Studies: Students will develop an appreciation of their place in the world. Students will understand the importance of rules and laws, the difference between a want and a need and understand the origin of customs, holidays and celebrations. Students will also become familiar with community helpers and famous people. Students will identify directions on a map and locate different places.
Science: Students will perform experiments and observations through hands on activities. They will be introduced to physical, life and earth sciences.
